What is the internet, if not a narcissist's dream come true?

Welcome! Search engines have given this site high ranking. If it has helped a few people, then it was worth the time and effort. I have read that the new DSM 5 will remove narcissistic personality disorder as a diagnosis. Why? Perhaps all of us suffer from some form of narcissism? Are we so self centered and selfish to the point where it doesn't really matter? Over 70 years ago, there was a similar type of insanity that infected millions of people - those who denounced it were laughed at, or worse.

David Brooks wrote an editorial in the New York Times March 10, 2011 called "The Modesty Manifesto" where he worries that what ailes the United States is Narcissism/high self esteem.

Here is a great web site devoted to Narcissism/ NPD:

Today it is easy to see several instances of narcissistic behavior in the news (or other disorders?). Hollywood and Washington DC are places where narcissists flock to seek admiration and power. In the international news we see world leaders who display narcissistic and megalomiac characteristics.

"The megalomaniac differs from the narcissist by the fact that he wishes to be powerful rather than charming, and seeks to be feared rather than loved. To this type belong many lunatics and most of the great men of history."

Bertrand Russell

"It is far better to be feared than loved."

The red queen in Alice in Wonderland

"You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you odd."

"Anybody who has survived his childhood has enough information about life to last him the rest of his days."

quotes from Flannery O'Connor

Ten years ago I stumbled across Narcissism Personality Disorder on the internet and it changed my life. Now a day doesn't go by that I find sites put up by victims or by health organizations on NPD. My goal in creating this site was to dispel the mystery of psychiatry so that victims would seek help. Narcissists will discourage you from looking into mental diseases because they are afraid you will find out about them. When you understand narcissists, it becomes easier to deal with them. They are the simply the most immature people on earth. They are pancake people, superficial, running around trying to puff themselves up, always looking for people to exploit and for people to admire them.

It is not easy dealing with narcissists. You have to be an adult when they are running around acting like kids - it demands wisdom and strength. Narcissists exploit weakness, or they create it in people. They are charming. They make you feel you are the greatest, they make you dependent on their approval. I have known good narcissist and toxic narcissists. Understanding them and yourself is the only way to survive. Don't criticize them (see why here). Remember that knowledge is not wisdom -wisdom is the ability to make the right choices.

Quotes:

"What good fortune for those in power that people do not think"

Adolf Hitler, as quoted by Joachim Fest.

Fearful people are more dependent, more easily manipulated and controlled, more susceptible to deceptively simple, strong, tough measures and hard-line postures. ... They may accept and even welcome repression if it promises to relieve their insecurities.

George Gerber

Half the harm that is done in this world
Is due to people who want to feel important
They don't mean to do harm
But the harm does not interest them.
Or they do not see it, or they justify it
Because they are absorbed in the endless struggle
To think well of themselves.

T. S. Eliot
